Mwebaza Club - Sunset Middle School
Sunset Middle School has been working with the Mwebaza Foundation since 2016. Since then, the Mwebaza Foundation has been featured in the Sunset Community Fair and selected by students for their community service projects. This year for their community service project, students are organizing a first-aid drive to collect items that are needed and will be donated to our 4 partner schools in Uganda.
Over the years, students in the Design elective class have worked on various projects with the Mwebaza Foundation, ranging from chicken coop blueprints to the framework of our container classroom project that was completed in 2019. The students had to design a three classroom schoolhouse out of two shipping containers that was then built by local Colorado high school students and professionals, and shipped to Mwebaza Primary School as a classroom addition.
In 2018, Sunset established a Mwebaza Club and this year they are working on several projects. The students are planning a “Movie Night” to raise funds for scholarships to help graduating Mwebaza School students continue on to Secondary School. The club is also excited to be taking part in a video chat session with the upper primary students at Mwebaza school to share stories and learn about each other's culture.
After enjoying slide presentations about schools in Uganda the 6th grade Language Arts students are writing letters to their Uganda friends and are excited about this cross cultural exchange opportunity. Sunset also has future plans to do other cultural exchanges with Mwebaza school including “book discussions” while reading the same novel.
